It wasn?t about the employees, it was about the shareholders. And this was a corporation that put forth a family image in it?s advertising and did so in a clever and humorous way. Their campaign really struck a chord in the everyman. And I was one of them and I went to work for them. But now, I was seeing the company I was working for as a dysfunctional family. And I was becoming the rebellious teenager (figuratively speaking).

So, I knew it was a matter of time before I?d get the ax. Though normally I would consider myself an optimist, I noticed I was experiencing some pretty heavy mood swings. I could be very depressed to feeling in another moment that the sky was the limit.

Well, I?ve heard it said before that God provides and even though I don?t consider myself the religious type, it was about that time I read an article that basically said that anger and depression were useful emotions.

Now, that was a different spin on the subject and I was intrigued.

Your perspective on what constitutes “”urgent”" will also change.

Here are a few important, but not urgent, activities to put high on your priority list:

1. Have a regular daily chat.

Turn off the TV and the cell phone and sit together for a short time, uninterrupted and face-to-face, every day to share your thoughts and feelings. Tell each other the little details as well as the big news. Focusing on each other for as little as fifteen minutes can make a huge difference. You will both feel appreciated and heard.

2. Spend one evening together each week.

Plan a specific night each week for your special date. Get a babysitter or trade childcare time with a friend. Once scheduled, treat the commitment as if it were written in stone.

In fact, gardening and housework are also aerobic exercise that most seniors routinely do. This is not to say that gardening and housework are complete health maintenance systems, but they do burn over 200 calories per hour, for the average person, and meet the aerobic definition.

Much of this mentality stems from the ?No pain ? No gain? era. Most of the original advocates of this theory are now ?nursing their own wounds? and practicing gentler forms of exercise. After all, none of us are immortal, and the body can only take so much abuse over time.

May I remind anyone, who is left standing, from the No pain ? No gain era, that walking is also classified as aerobic exercise.

Then the question is–what is the price to be paid. What price you ask! Yes, there is always a price because the cardinal law of economics is–there is no such thing as a free lunch.

The price paid is lost opportunities and slower long-term economic growth. Downturns, recessions as they are called, have a beneficial purpose. Their purpose is to provide renewed liquidity to the business system. Think of it as the catharsis of the economic system. Recessions cleanse the system of marginal companies and transfer their resources to stronger more productive enterprises. They also force consumers to start saving more to pay-off some of their massive debts they have accumulated during the expansion. This sets the stage for the next upward expansion. Without recessions there would be stagnation.

Recessions can be painful for most, but a time of great opportunity for some. Downturns provide the opportunities for those clever individuals, who have the wherewithal (the liquidity), to purchase assets on the cheap. These assets are then transferred into more productive hands, and the economy benefits.

No matter how many rules or laws politicians put in place, the business cycle is here to stay.

Look at the audience, not at the slides, whenever possible.

You can use the shortcut command [Ctrl]P to access the Pen tool during a slide show. Click with your mouse and drag to use the Pen tool to draw during your slide show. To erase everything you’ve drawn, press the E key. To turn off the Pen tool, press [Esc] once.

MISCELLANEOUS

Master Slide Set-Up:

The “master slide” will allow you to make changes that are reflected on every slide in your presentation. You can change fonts, colors, backgrounds, headers, and footers at the “master slide” level.

First, go to the “View” menu.

Pull down the “Master” menu.

Select the “slide master” menu.

You may now make changes at this level that meet your presentation needs.
